Wife’s Male Friend- A short story

Cherry was super-excited and changed her clothes for the fourth time while gazing herself in the mirror. Tarun was surprised but not shocked as he knew today she will met her best friend. “Hurry up”, he said ” Pulkit should be here any time sweetie, he has left the airport already”. She looked at the wall clock and went shocked. “Oh my God, you should have told me before”!! She zipped her jeans and buttoned her yellow Georgette shirt. She ran towards the kitchen to stir the kheer kept on stove and re-checked the dishes she has prepared for the special guest.Pihu, her 5 year old daughter asked Cherry to give her some Kheer to which Cherry lovingly requested to wait a little more. Cherry’s face displayed an unique smile it was hard for her to hide her paramount happiness, she was going to meet his best friend, Pulkit.

Cherry and Pulkit completed their high school together and enrolled in the same university to pursue different courses. Their homes was just a km apart and hence they used to meet every week. Their parents always supported their friendship which was just not educational but backed by a emotional and psychological support. If there is any person on earth who will unbiased listen and understand her then its only Pulkit. Whenever she was sad or distrust she simply gave a call to him and without any words, he would understand her. And Cherry has always guided Pulkit like a mentor and though she ultimately turned into a housewife but being a smart, influential and intellect girl, he always agreed to her. Years ahead after her marriage, this is the first time Pulkit was coming to meet her from London.

As she was lost in her thoughts, her MIL interrupted her ” You should have wore a Saree today, you should look like a Bahu”, Cherry’s smile vanished away but as the door bell rang, she couldn’t react more. Pihu rushed to open the door and there Pulkit entered in. Cherry went emotional to see him and she forgot everything.

For those 2 hours that he stayed at their place, Cherry left no stone unturned and did her best hospitality. She avoided glances of her MIL while she was laughing, listening, gossiping with Pulkit. But she was consciously  aware that she was being watched. Her MIL didn’t moved an inch throughout Pulkit’s stay and it was just Cherry moving in and out of the kitchen.. She recalled how her hubby persuaded her to meet him in any restaurant but she wanted him to come home. Anyways his best friend was in front of her eyes and that was an exuberant moment for her. On the contrary, Tarun was enchanted to meet Pulkit and thoroughly enjoyed his company. He himself tried to help Cherry but his mother teased him to trust his wife’s cooking instincts and pulled him back to remain seated next to Pulkit while grabbing the other side by herself. Pulkit had to rush for his hometown and called Cherry for final bye. At the door Cherry couldn’t control her emotions, meeting his friend like a regular guest was altogether a different and weird feeling . She even hadn’t held his hands or got chance to sit next to him. But this time she spurt out her emotions and instead gave him a big hug to further realize later  that MIL had gone nauseated.

Humne to nai dekhi aisi dosti kisi ki. Humare bhi dost they but we knew our boundaries”, murmured her MIL  and went back to her room.

Entire happiness of Cherry was gone but Tarun calmly held her hands and moved her  into the bedroom. He hugged her tightly and cleaned her sobs. “Why people judge friendship of a woman especially once she gets married? Mummy heartily welcome all your friends be it male or female then what went  wrong in my case,  I don’t understand. Do I need to clarify? ? ”  Tarun kissed on her forehead and pressed her shoulder so as to comfort her. He showed her the pics that he clicked today and appraised her being  a perfect host. He said he feels blessed to have a wife like her who has such a good friend.

Lucky are the people who have old friends to  accompany with. You have one so cherish it. Don”t bothers what others think about you when you know what you are. You had never questioned me about my friends so why should I need to question you? And don’t worry about Ma, you know it’s not easy to persuade her and it’s the same for everybody.  She has become old now and at this stage I can’t change her or make her feel lonely when Papa is not with us. Friend is a friend whether of a husband or wife. And is this is how we have to guide Pihu so that years ahead she don’t feel sad the way you are feeling today. And my darling you are also sweet mugging friend of mine , our daughter and Mummy. So be happy and please do a favor to bring the kheer kept in the fridge for all of us. We ate very less in fear you would need it more for your best friend.”

P.S. Don’t waste your time in convincing others. Stay happy, stay blessed.  best-friends
